Recruits sport new SAF fatigues (Straits Times 25 Dec 2008)

Basic Military Training Centre recruits were seen wearing the new 'digital camouflage' uniforms at the SAF ferry terminal yesterday. -- ST PHOTO: ASHLEIGH SIM

NEW recruits are among the first Singapore Armed Forces (SAF) servicemen to wear the new 'digital camouflage' uniforms.
More than 1,000 recruits from the Basic Military Training Centre were seen yesterday wearing the pixellated uniforms, more than three months after they were unveiled. The recruits were released from their Pulau Tekong camp for the Christmas break.

The new uniforms will be phased in over the next three years, with recruits, active servicemen and some national servicemen (NSmen) already receiving them. By 2011, all NSmen will be wearing the new fatigues. There are about 300,000 active and operationally ready NSmen here.

The new-look combat fatigues, commonly known as the No. 4, bear tiny pixels that create a 'quivering effect' on the eye. This will make it harder for a soldier to be seen at distances of less than 50m.

The Defence Ministry said the new uniforms will meet the varying demands of the areas where Third Generation SAF soldiers operate and improve their ability to survive on the battlefield.

The new fabric is also cooler and more comfortable. Full-time national serviceman Seah Jun Jie, 21, said: 'Even when we were training and perspiring under the hot sun, the fabric dried very fast - it felt as though I was wearing a T-shirt.'

------End of Article-----

Wow, the last comment, saying that it feels like wearing a T-shirt? I wonder how cooling is that!

As for the burning question whether NCC will be changing uniforms as well, I think I can safely say that it's not in the near future. The government has to make sure that all the NS guys have their uniforms changed first (and as you have read it's stated to be 2011), so perhaps your younger siblings who join NCC in the future will be wearing digital uniforms!

But don't worry, when you guys enlist for NS in a few years' time, you'll be wearing them. =)

It's over!

Pics of the day:

I'm at back row, 3rd from left. Mr Khaidir is back row, 6th from right. This was taken after our commissioning parade.

I guess C/CPT Fahmy must have felt like it was a torture taking a pic with my 'platoon', syndicate 3, made up of mostly West Zone Teacher Officers. I have had a lot of fun, learnt many new things and made many new friends.

I've found C/CPT Fahmy's blog, but it's somehow by invitation only. If anyone of you knows him well, please get him to drop by at this blog man.

I miss my coursemates already. It's good to know that the NCC fraternity is very big, but closely connected. We've also attended a seminar on what's in store for NCC in the future, so let me assure you that if you are a NCC cadet,

You are in for a jolly good ride!

And if you are a primary school student (or even a secondary school student thinking of a new CCA), NCC is one of the best CCAs offering you adventure, fun, leadership, discipline, sports and a whole lot more!

LULDCCA. Now it's stuck in my head. Test me next time. =)

Challenge Quest

Congratulations to
Asyraf, Zi Zhao, Wafir, Hazwan for performing well in the annual challenge quest.

In the obstacle course, they were first in their detail, but unfortunately their timing was not good enough for a medal placing overall. I saw how they fought on especially when they were so tired. They cheered one another and perservered. That is the spirit we want in us. I'm sure they will share with you their experience.

Good job Regent NCC! Even though you did not win a medal, other schools noticed you, and as the teacher officer there, I was extremely proud of you guys when people asked who were those people.

Update

Hi cadets.

Recently, everyone has been busy. Students busy with revision; teachers busy with marking.

I applaud those of you who have been turning for training regularly. The attendance booklet is evidence, as well as my pair of eyes. I am glad that most of you find training fun and refreshing. Rest assured that we are constantly thinking of ways to improve and make trainings more enjoyable (and at the same time fulfilling).

Just some points to note:
You guys know the O level Orals is underway, so don't make noise when you're at the 3rd level area (especially if you're in the vicinity of the NCC room).

I have consultation for O levels SS students this Wednesday 4-6pm. I will try to 'sneak out' if there is not much business. =p

For this Friday, I have been asked to be the Oral examiner at a nearby school, so I wouldn't be at the training at all. Take care!

Lastly, there are some of you Part As who have not been turning for trainings (especially training on Wednesday). Please understand that Physical training is an important part of NCC. For example, how else can you stand in the file and not move for a long time? It takes fitness - both physical and mental. Or when the newly weapons arrive in late sept/oct, how else do you think you can carry them for long periods of time? You can see Part Bs carrying the Jerry Cans; let me tell you they are really heavy. Nobody is pushing you to do 10 pull ups, or 20 standard push ups, or run 5 laps at top speed, all at one go. We train progressively, meaning we take step by step, to make sure we are improving, and not over-exerting ourselves. We then play some games. I was involved too! I was a recruit and I wasn't even sure of the command when I was in the file. =x

Anyway, do tell all your friends to come. It's just a fun afternoon to mingle with your fellow NCC mates and to chit chat and relax, and while relaxing, why not build up your physical strength as well? Think about it. =)

Well that's it. See you guys in school.

For Part C cadets

Event: sell flags
Date: 30 August Saturday
Organisation: Lions Befrienders
Attire: To be confirmed
Choice: Optional (Only for Part C as stated in the email I received)

This is not a HQ NCC event.

Lions Befrienders sent an email to appeal NCC units for volunteers to sell flags. They are appealing for help to raise the $140,000 they need to fund their programmes for the elderly.

This activity will build your character.

This activity is part of our Initiative component and will also educate you guys on the need for compassion towards the elderly as we will all grow old.

Social interaction skills and confidence in speaking and interacting will also be enhanced.

Flag-selling will increase the confidence of each cadet and also place them in situations where they will learn resilence and tact. (Not everyone you approach will donate; do you give up? How should you be speaking when you need favours?)

Flag-selling will give you cip hours, but of course that should be the last reason you are signing up for.

To all Part C cadets,

Go spread the word.
This is purely optional. Don't feel obliged that you must sign up, or the teachers or our school will 'lose face'. Sign up because you think it's a worthy cause, which I can tell you now it is.
Anyone interested, please give me your names by

Wednesday 13th August 2008.

Discipline in the parade.

Some of you might have seen this picture before.

Dogs have been trained.

Well, I wouldn't equate you all to dogs (That is not my intention!), but you all have been well trained by the respective leaders, so you will be standing at your best. No fidgeting, no movement; only wriggling of toes.

Of course, if you really cannot hold it anymore, fall out.

You know where you're supposed to look at. I guess it's natural if you want to look at what's going on, but better make sure your neck doesn't turn!

You guys have been doing a great job. This goes out to all the uniformed groups (not sure if they are reading this) as well.

The parade will be great.

Your new time table is out!

http://eblaze.regentsec.net/

Check it out now.

Thursday, July 10, 2008

It's time.

Tomorrow! You will be embarking on a journey! That no ordinary men will be fit to do! You will safeguard the pathways and streets! You will direct the lost! You will provide light in the dark! You will fly the school flag high on your sleeves!

Bah. Sorry. Lame attempt at trying to type something inspirational. HAHA!

You will be a road marshall! That's a very important job, seriously. Rest assured everyone in the school is appreciative of your efforts. Especially me, who will also be patrolling around and making sure everything is okay.

Do remember to give me your most handsome pose if I do whip out a camera to take a photo of you. Don't know when I'll do that? Then you better look smart all the time. =D
